Ella Sheltawy is a British-Egyptian emerging artist based in London. She is a figurative painter, creating rough, expressive work with a bold immediacy.
Her work tries to express the political paralysis and frustration felt by many of us in the West, as we exist within a broken system committed to active denial. Ella tries to explore this sense of dissociation by evoking the uncanny in her paintings, allowing hidden anxieties to surface in unexpected ways. These paintings are based on found photographic images combined intuitively through collage, sketches and imagination. She has recently curated her first exhibition, States of Uncertainty, bringing together a new group of artists on this theme.
Ella is completing a BA in Contemporary Portraiture at the Art Academy London, and has exhibited in the RA Summer Show, as well as at hARTslane and Playroom galleries.
